Greece: Scuffles erupt at banned anti-Macron protest in Athens

Scuffles erupted between police and supporters of the Popular Unity party who were protesting against French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Athens, Thursday. The altercations took place as the protesters attempted to pass through a police cordon in an effort to reach the Pnyx hill, near the Acropolis, where Macron was holding a speech. Member of the Political Council of Popular Unity Panagiotis Sotiris said, «we're opposing the fact that the French president is here accompanied by a whole bunch of businessmen in order to buy Greek assets, that is to buy from the privatised Greek companies. And we oppose privatisation. We do not want to see public companies, such as the water company, be sold.» A total of two protests against Macron took place on Thursday, despite a ban issued by police.
