Greece: Oil spill from sunken tanker prompts closure of Athens' beaches

Large sections of the Athens coastline have been closed off after spilled oil washed up along the shores of Argo-Saronic gulf, Thursday. Coast guards, emergency personnel and specialised cleaning services swept the coast in areas most affected by the oil spill. Around 2,500 tonnes of fuel oil and marine gas were leaked from the oil tanker Agia Zoni II that sunk earlier on Sunday near Salamina... Еще Island. Leak was described as ecological disaster by Greek authorities. Both the vessel's captain and chief engineer had been charged with negligence but released on bail.
