Greece: Left-wing students protest decision to end academic sanctuary

Left-wing students marched towards the Greek parliament to demonstrate against the repealing of a law which forbade police from entering Universities in Athens on Thursday. The academic sanctuary law was legislated in 1982 and forbade police from entering all University buildings. The student protesters began their march in the Exarchia neighbourhood, an area known for its left-wing and... Еще anarchist traditions and where the Athens Polytechnic uprising took place in 1973 resulting in the deaths of dozens of students when the military government forcefully ended a protest. One of the legacies of the uprising was the original academic sanctuary law. The bill abolishing the law was successfully passed later on Thursday by the Greek parliament.
