Greece: Health workers rally to decry working conditions on International Nurses Day

A rally of health workers organised by the the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN) took place in front of the Evangelismos hospital in Athens to protest working conditions and needs of better funding amid the coronavirus pandemic, on the occasion of International Nurses Day. According to reports, protesters demanded an increase in GDP expenditure to provide better working equipment, upgrade health centres conditions, guarantee the number of needed professional hiring and ICU beds among other things. International Nurses Day is observed worldwide on May 12 and is also the birthday of Florence Nightingale. It is celebrated yearly to mark the contributions that nurses make to society worldwide. Greece has recorded over 2,700 confirmed cases of coronavirus since the outbreak began and more than 150 fatalities related to the virus thus far, according to data compiled by John Hopkins University.
