Greece: EU pledges €700mln to help Athens face migrant influx

EU leaders held a press conference in Kastanies on Tuesday following their visit to the Greek-Turkish border amid the large-scale influx of migrants and refugees over the past few days following Turkey's decision to no longer prevent them from attempting to enter Europe. A total of €350 million ($391 million) of financial assistance will be handed over immediately to Athens, with another €350 million available upon request. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) is preparing «the deployment of one offshore vessel, six coast patrol vessels, two helicopters, one aircraft, three thermovision vehicles, 100 border guards in addition to the current 530 border guards,» said von der Leyen.
