Greece: Athens court suspends asylum granted to Turkish soldier

A Greek appeals court suspended the asylum status granted to former Turkish soldier Suleyman Ozkaynakci who fled with seven others to Greece following the 2016 botched coup attempt, in Athens on Monday. The decision to grant asylum to Ozkaynakci was made by an independent asylum council on December 29. The ruling took place at the Greek government's request, which claimed that granting asylum to... Еще the Turkish soldier could harm bilateral ties with Turkey. The court granted a temporary order until the case is formally examined on February 15. Following the ruling, Ozkaynakci was detained by authorities. The soldiers landed in the northern Greek city of Alexandroupoli by helicopter on July 17 and requested asylum from Greek authorities. Turkey issued a request for the Greek government to return the eight officers, which was relayed to the Justice Ministry. All eight deny taking part in the failed coup.
