The Chief Minister of Gibraltar made an official statement on Thursday, informing about the detention of a supertanker, Grace 1, by the British Royal Marines in Gibraltar on suspicion of carrying crude oil to Syria in contravention of EU and US sanctions.
The tanker was reported to have sailed from Iran, a close ally of the Syrian government and was suspected to be delivered to Syria's Baniyas... Еще Refinery, in a violation of EU backed sanctions against the Baniyas refinery and US-backed sanctions against international sales of Iranian oil, following tensions between Washington and Tehran after the US withdrew from the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal earlier this year.
Fabian Picardo, Chief Minister of Gibraltar announced «we have detained the vessel and its cargo. This action arose from information giving the Gibraltar Government reasonable grounds to believe that the vessel, the Grace 1, was acting in breach of European Union sanctions against Syria.»
The British Foreign Office has in turn «welcomed» the action by the Gibraltarian authorities.
