Sigmar Gabriel, German Foreign Minister (German): «Giving second interview is «honouring»?
Journalist (German): «That is what Spiegel wrote. So thanks a lot. Can we consider it as a step to a new policy of detente between Germany and Russia?»
Sigmar Gabriel, German Foreign Minister (German): «Giving interview is a sign? Generally speaking, no. I think that we, German politicians, should get... Еще used to the fact that there are more and more media. We even speak with the Turkish TV channels and newspapers. There are people in Germany who watch Russian television. Of course, we should be interested in, let's say, German politics in there. I am absolutely convinced that we need a new policy of detente with Russia, despite the fact that, because of the Crimea and Ukraine, we have a serious conflict. We will not be able to solve many problems in the world without cooperation with Russia.»
Journalist (German): I recall the quote of Hillary Clinton — 'basket of deplorables.' About the fact that half of Trump's voters are a 'pathetic gathering.' You do not think that by saying this, you will mobilise these people. I mean, we have already seen in America that due to such statements people say to themselves: 'No. This is not true, and I will choose them anyway.'»
Sigmar Gabriel, German Foreign Minister (German): «First of all, I think that you should not lie and pretend that this problem does not exist. The voters should not absolve themselves of responsibility. One can not say: 'I want to live in this country, to enjoy the opportunities that democracy gives,' and then, angry at something in politics, vote for people who will destroy this democracy. Unlike other countries in the world, this country already had the experience that such people creep into society. I have never seen an election campaign like this. A campaign that would have been so cruel, in part even with physical violence, when members of democratic parties were subjected not only to verbal attacks, but even partly to physical attacks. The country is in good condition, and we want to preserve it. And I'm in favour of two things: to clearly find out what is behind the ideology of all the 'Hoekes' [Bjorn Hocke, a member of AfD] and simultaneously speak with people about their concerns. I always say that in Germany there is a task of double integration, that it is necessary to integrate arriving refugees and to unite those people who live here. You can not have the impression that everything is done for some people, but nothing for others. I thought it was a big mistake that Angela Merkel spoke against the minimum pension. It would be necessary. I would say to those cities and municipalities that accept refugees: 'We will not only reimburse you for the expenses of refugees, but we will give you the same amount for citizens.' School repairs, improvement of health care — all of this also needs to be done, so that people would not think that they had been forgotten. But what can not be done is to minimise the danger of what is happening in the minds and, unfortunately, the souls of the leadership part of AfD. This is a dangerous path for this country.»
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel stated that Germany and the wider international community need better cooperation with Russia, speaking in an exclusive interview in Hannover, Thursday.
Gabriel said that «we will not be able to solve many problems in the world without cooperation with Russia.» He then also noted the necessity of «a new policy of detente with Russia, despite the fact that, because of the Crimea and Ukraine, we have a serious conflict.»
Speaking on the upcoming general elections on September 24, Sigmar Gabriel underlined the threat of the voting for anti-immigration party Alternative for Germany (AfD). He went on commenting on their political campaign which has been «so cruel, in part even with
