Germany: 'We don’t jail journalists here' — Merkel takes dig at Turkish travel warning

German Chancellor Angela Merkel sought to reassure a campaign rally in Delbrueck, western Germany, that she would insist on diplomatic solutions for Ukraine and North Korea, while criticising Turkey for its role in press suppression, Sunday. Speaking to the hundreds of supporters who had gathered to watch her speak before the upcoming general elections at the end of the month, Merkel urged... Еще Turkey to release 12 German journalists. «Today is journalist Deniz Yucel's birthday. We believe that he is prison for absolutely no reason, as are at least 11 other Germans. I want to say very clearly here that every Turkish citizen can travel here. We don’t jail journalists here, we don’t put journalists into investigative custody,» she said. Merkel's words come in response to a warning issued by Turkey for travel to Germany. Meanwhile, with rising tensions in the Korean Peninsula and conflict over Ukraine, Merkel said that there was only one option on the table. «I would like to emphasise that only a diplomatic solution is justifiable and we have to do everything to ensure such a solution is reached and Europe has to engage in it more,» Merkel said.
