Germany: Thousands reject planned law to increase police surveillance powers

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Dusseldorf on Saturday to protest against a proposed bill in North Rhine-Westphalia which will hand greater power to police officers. Demonstrators marched through Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse and moved towards the state parliament building. According to reports, more than 10,000 protesters took part in the march. The police law, proposed by CDU/FDP... Еще parties, was widely criticised for violation of freedom and citizens' rights. According to the proposal, police will be given authority to prolong detentions by up to one month, to expand video surveillance and to gain access to messengers.
