A 47-year-old Czech-Vietnamese man went on trial in Berlin on Tuesday, accused of acting as a getaway driver after a kidnapping in the German capital in July of last year. The suspect, identified only as Long N. H., allegedly rented and drove a van which was used to seize Vietnamese businessman Trinh Zuan Thahn from Berlin's Tiergarten park, in what has been described as a 'Cold War-style... Еще' abduction by former German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel. It is said that Vietnamese agents kidnapped Thahn before taking him back to his home country where he has since been handed two life sentences for corruption. The scandal has harmed bilateral relations between Hanoi and Berlin, with Germany expelling two diplomats in the fallout, although Vietnam claims Thahn returned on his own volition. The trial is expected to last three weeks.
