Germany: 'So horrible' — Wuppertal residents react to Solingen sibling murder

Wuppertal residents commented Saturday on the recent murder of five children in the nearby town of Solingen, as a makeshift memorial was set up in front of the apartment building where the kids' bodies were found. On Thursday, the bodies of five siblings aged between 1 and 8 were found in an apartment, with the 27-year-old mother suspected of having committed the murders. Flowers, stuffed animals, candles and notes containing drawings of hearts and asking «Why?» were seen constituting a makeshift memorial in front of the deceased siblings' building in Solingen on Saturday. «The woman who has killed the children is the same age as me. That makes it even worse,» said Wuppertal resident Jessica, speaking from the city's Doppersberg square. «It is so horrible, really like a film. You just can’t imagine how it can happen here, especially as it is so near.» «One could never have thought that something like that should happen in a small city like Solingen,» echoed Wuppertal resident Philipp. «What has happened, I have personally found very hard, and to tell the truth, it really hit me. Because, as said, it was children’s lives.» Prior to an attempted suicide at Dusseldorf Central Station on Thursday, the 27-year-old mother had stressed how badly she was feeling in a WhatsApp chat with her mother. She then texted, «Send the police to the flat, the children are dead,» according to Head of Murder Division, Marcel Maierhofer. Investigators suspect that a broken relationship with an ex-husband was the motive for the crime. Prosecutors have filed five murder charges and an arrest warrant against the woman, who had sent her sixth and eldest child, an 11-year-old boy, to stay with his grandmother before her suicide attempt on Thursday.
