Germany: Police unveil trial suveillance system to tackle Berlin «high crime» areas

Police unveiled a trial mobile street surveillance system in Revaler Strasse on Thursday, that is intended to counter high criminal activity across five busy Berlin areas. Revaler Strasse near Warschauer Bruecke, along with Alexanderplatz, Leopoldplatz, Kottbusser Tor and Hermannplatz are five major areas that have seen reported higher crime rates in recent years. Minister for Interior and... Еще Sports, Andreas Geise, explained that, «This move is raising the protection of Berlin citizens and visitors in these 'crime polluted areas'», adding that «Culprits will be more afraid [to perform criminal acts] with this added video monitoring, as we will be to able collect evidence that will be used to prosecute perpetrators, because, at the moment prosecuting processes are failing due to insufficient proof.» After the three month trial, there will be a joint evaluation by the police and the Senate to decide if they will implement the cameras on a permanent basis.
