German police have removed hundreds of student protesters from Berlin's legendary Volksbuehne theatre on Thursday, after they had been occupying the building for a week. The protest was aimed at the appointment of the theatre's new artistic director, Chris Dercon, who had previously held a position at the Tate modern in London. Protesters rallied against the appointment as they believed Decron... Еще poses a threat of commercialisation to the 25 year old avant garde theatre. While no arrests were made during the eviction, theatre worker and protester, Maximilian Boehme, believed that, «the police also behaved very aggressively, very controlled, very overwhelming behaviour». Berlin Police spokesperson, Winfried Wenzel, explained that police had to act after new director Chris Dercon filed an official criminal complaint against the protesters, who had initially planned to occupy the building for three months.
