Germany: Peace talks top of agenda at Merkel-Poroshenko meeting

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her desire for continued ceasefire talks to resolve the conflict in Eastern Ukraine, at the joint press conference with Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko in Berlin on Tuesday. «We are committed to prisoner exchange, that the ceasefire regime will be fulfilled and all of these projects will be pushed, I also spoke about it with the Russian President... Еще [Vladimir] Putin, that even though it can be difficult [to implement], we should not stop the efforts,» underlined Merkel. Poroshenko blamed pro-Russian rebels for ceasefire violations and lamented the lack of progress at the Minsk peace talks. The German Chancellor cast further doubt on the Nordstream 2 pipeline supplying Russian gas to Europe, saying it could not proceed without Ukrainian involvement in overland transit. Merkel also condemned the alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria on Sunday, vowing to take the investigation to the UN Security Council.
