Germany: Organisers of fatal 2010 Loveparade appear in court in Duesseldorf

The trial of the organisers of the fatal 2010 Loveparade festival got underway in Duesseldorf, on Friday. Ten defendants — four festival organisers and six district employees — are standing trial on charges of negligence and manslaughter. Originally planned to be held in Duisburg, where the disaster occurred over seven ago, it was moved to nearby Duesseldorf’s Congress Center to accommodate a... Еще larger audience. In July 2010, the free festival was held in Duisburg in a closed off area for the first time. High attendance to the event caused the police to close off the tunnel entrance to the festival area to limit further entries. However, people still attempted to enter from the rear, unaware they had been advised to turn away. As a result, the tunnel became overcrowded, crushing those inside. Twenty-one people died of suffocation and over 500 sustained injuries in the incident.
