Germany: 'No surviving animals' — massive blaze at Krefeld Zoo's monkey sanctuary

More than 30 animals were killed at the Krefeld Zoo in North Rhine-Westphalia after a massive blaze erupted in the monkey sanctuary in the early hours of Wednesday. «Our worst fears have become reality,» the zoo said in a statement on its Facebook page. «There are no surviving animals in the money sanctuary.» A nearby gorilla garden was undamaged. Firefighters were called at 00:38 local time (23:38 GMT) and arrived several minutes later to find the sanctuary completely in flames. The cause of the fire is still unknown, however, according to reports, the fire could have been caused by fireworks. The local police are investigating the cause.
