More than 30 animals were killed at the Krefeld Zoo in North Rhine-Westphalia after a massive blaze erupted in the monkey sanctuary in the early hours of Wednesday.

Firefighters were called at 00:38 local time (23:38 GMT) and arrived several minutes later to find the sanctuary completely in flames.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, however, according to reports, the fire could have been caused by fireworks. The local police are investigating the cause.
The 2,000 sq/m (21,530 sq/ft) monkey sanctuary which was built in 1975 used to be home for chimpanzees and orang-utans, as well as marmosets, acouchis and birds.
