Germany: Merkel, Qatari Emir open German-Qatar Economic Conference in Berlin

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani opened the Qatar — Germany Business and Investment Forum in Berlin on Friday. The two leaders delivered welcome speeches before the conference sessions began, highlighting progress in German-Qatar cooperation. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani also addressed the GCC (Gulf... Еще Cooperation Council) crisis saying: «My people and myself continue to look to Germany full of respect and appreciation and we also appreciate the fact that Germany's government has taken a very actively stance against the illegal measures that have been imposed upon us by our neighbours and which are still in place.» On her end, Merkel said: «We in Germany regret this crisis [in the Gulf region]. Germany is not a party in this conflict but we support all constructive contributions to resolve this dispute, like for example the efforts of negotiations of Kuwait.» Moreover, the Qatrari Emir mentioned that Qatar will expand investments in Germany to EUR 10 billion (USD 11.6 billion) over the next five years, to which Merkel responded, «that makes us very happy.»
