Germany: Merkel promotes vocal critic in cabinet reshuffle

German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke at a press conference from the CDU headquarters in Berlin on Sunday about decisions taken in the building of a new cabinet, ahead of her party's conference day on Monday. Commenting on Health Minister Hermann Groehe and Interior Minister Thomas De Maiziere losing their positions, she said it was «sad,» but that the cabinet reshuffle demanded «painful changes... Еще.» When asked about the appointment of Jens Spahn, who has been a vocal critic of Merkel, particularly with regards to her refugee policy, the Chancellor explained, «If people make critical comments — Mr Spahn is not the only one who does that — this is fine, and nevertheless the mission still exists to work well for Germany. And I believe he wants to do his bit, just the same as any other cabinet minister.» Spahn is due to take over from Groehe as the new health secretary.
