German Chancellor Angela Merkel branded the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi a «monstrosity,” while speaking at a campaign event in the Hessian town of Ortenberg on Monday. The chancellor also repeated her earlier statement on arms exports to Saudi Arabia, saying «so long as it's not explained, there will be no arms exports to Saudi Arabia. I assure you of that explicitly... Еще.» Khashoggi was seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 but has not been seen alive since. Turkish officials alleged that the journalist was brutally murdered inside, while the Saudi government initially claimed that he had left the building alive on the same day. Saudi officials have subsequently changed their position and in a statement released on October 19, and claimed that Khashoggi had in fact died in the consulate due to a quarrel that became violent. Minister President of Hessen and fellow CDU politician Volker Bouffier was in attendance at the campaign rally. State elections are due to be held in Hesse on October 28 and many observers believe the results will represent yet another test of Merkel's popularity and that of the governing CDU/SPD grand coalition that she leads.
