Germany: Merkel declines to comment on successor after meeting with Soeder at Chiemsee lake

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she would not comment on her thoughts on her successor as German Chancellor, while speaking at a joint press conference alongside Minister President of Bavaria Markus Soeder at Herrenchiemsee New Palace on Chiemsee lake on Tuesday. «You know that as Chancellor I am no longer running for the next election. This is connected with the question of who my successor should be, but I am quite reluctant to answer that. I will therefore not comment on anything in that regard. I can only say Bavaria has a good Minister President and he invited me today. You should not expect me to say anything else,» Merkel said. On the topic of EU response to the Coronavirus ahead of the EU leaders summit on Friday, Soeder said «I think it is important to propose and consider in this in this presidency that we are going to take a new approach. And maybe we manage to divide Europe differently, not like in past crises in Europe into debtors and creditors, but all should be understood as partners in the joint developments in Europe.» When asked if she would attend a similar event in North Rhine-Westphalia, Merkel said, «In any case, I have always said, now in the run-up to this invitation, when I am invited by other cabinets, that is, other state presidents, that I would also visit other cabinets in Germany regardless of whether they are applying for the CDU chair or not.» Merkel met with Soeder at the Bavarian touristic location to discuss Germany's presidency of the Council of the European Union. On Friday EU leaders will meet in Brussels to discuss the EU recovery fund. This is the first time they will meet since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
