Germany: Merkel campaign rally speech in Gelnhausen met with boos and applause

German Chancellor and Christian Democratic Union Party (CDU) leader Angela Merkel delivered a 33-minute speech ahead of next month's federal election, in Main-Kinzig-Kreis's town of Gelnhausen, in Hesse, Monday. «Last years were not easy. You remember well the year 2015 when so many refugees came to us,» the German leader addressed the rally, adding, «I would like to thank you; thank you to... Еще those who helped in the hour of need.» As she delivered her thanks to volunteers and professionals who took part in the resettlement of refugees who arrived in Germany since 2015, Merkel drew not only the applause from the rally but also and boos by supporters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) Party. With regards to terrorist threats, Merkel said that «Islamic terrorism is one of the biggest challenges that we have to deal with — not only we, but also our neighbours France, Belgium, Great Britain and many countries around the world.» Merkel is set to appear at 50 rallies across Germany ahead of the federal elections on September 24, where she hopes to win a fourth term as chancellor.
