German Chancellor Angela Merkel received a standing ovation after her final speech as leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at the party congress in Hamburg on Friday. The Chancellor spoke of challenges that will face the CDU in the future such as climate change, the future of the European Union and the decline of multilateralism around the world. «There are innumerable questions... Еще, problems and challenges, and it will be up to the CDU to show possible solutions. We must show that we are ready, that we are prepared, we want to defend our way of living, our liberal values and our interests — both internally but also internationally,» Merkel said. Party members applauded for several minutes following her speech, some holding signs reading «Thanks boss, for 18 years of leadership,» as can be seen in footage filmed on Friday. Merkel's successor will be announced later in the day following a vote of 1001 party delegates.
