Germany: Merkel calls for an end to Syrian 'massacre'

German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the Syrian government for what she described as the «massacre» of civilians in the ongoing conflict in Syria, during an address to the German parliament's lower house in Berlin on Thursday. Her comments follow a recent spike in violence in and around the embattled Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta. The chancellor criticised the «awful results in Syria... Еще,» drawing attention to the deaths of children and the destruction of hospitals in the war-torn country. According to the German leader, Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel is set to speak with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the issue, adding «we must all do everything within our power to bring this massacre to an end, ladies and gentlemen.» Merkel also reiterated the importance of a strong EU to help in finding a solution to the conflict in Syria and elsewhere, as well as finding a solution to migration issues, saying that Europe must «continue to work resolutely to tackle the causes of migration.»
