Germany: Merkel attends Kristallnacht commemoration in Berlin synagogue

German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended a commemorative ceremony for the 80th anniversary of the 1938 Kristallnacht, at the Rykestrasse Synagogue in Berlin on Friday. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also was also seen among the attendees. Speaking from the altar, Merkel said, «One cannot simply 'label' all this suffering. I simply do not have the words. Therefore, I speak to you today... Еще for another reason.» Kristallnacht, which translates as the «the night of the Broken Glass,» was a state-sponsored anti-Jewish pogrom instigated by the Nazis on 9-10 November 1938. The event is named after the destruction of Jewish property during the pogrom, in which synagogues, shop fronts and homes in their thousands were smashed up. Around 30,000 Jewish males were rounded up and sent to concentration camps and over 500 were murdered on that same night. Mandatory credit: ZDF
