German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Italy and Germany are in agreement with the «basic structure» of the EU recovery fund in response to the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, during a press conference at Schloss Meseberg palace, on Monday.
Speaking alongside Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, Merkel said the EU recovery fund must «be something massive and something special and that it is not dwarfed, the task is huge, therefore the answer must also be big.»
Merkel said however she is unsure if they will reach an agreement on the compromise recovery fund proposed by European Council President Charles Michel, saying «it is not sure, there is still a long way to go.»
On Friday EU leaders will meet in Brussels to discuss the EU recovery fund. This is the first time they will meet since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
