Germany: 'Many details to be cleared up' about withdrawal of US troops — DefMin spox.

German government and military spokespersons discussed the imminent withdrawal of almost 12,000 US troops currently stationed in Germany. The federal press conference, which took place in Berlin, also touched on the current coronavirus situation for German holidaymakers as well as factory working conditions. «Our minister talked to his US colleague throughout many other meetings, including regarding the US plan to eventually reduce the number of troops here. So, the procedures were discussed and they were informed about it. The numbers have already been communicated to us,» confirmed Ministry of Defence spokesperson Arne Collatz-Johannsen. “But as you can imagine there are still many details to be cleared up and discussed and we need to wait for these details,» he added. US Defence secretary Mark Esper announced the imminent withdrawal of almost 12,000 US troops currently stationed in Germany during a press conference at the Pentagon on Wednesday. German officials responded in the following manner to the announcement in today's press conference. Other government spokespersons remained tight-lipped, contrasting with the US government's public attacks regarding the situation. «I cannot add much more here apart from what we have already said in the past. The government believes that the close cooperation with the US troops in Germany is of mutual interest,» answered Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christofer Burger. The press conference covered the current COVID-19 situation, as spokespeople confirmed access to free tests for all German holidaymakers upon their return. «The tests can be made by health offices, in airports, train stations or other travel hubs as well as by all the allowed doctors. These free tests protect everyone, no one should have to abstain from having a test due to financial reasons because health should not be a monetary issue,» confirmed Ministry of health spokesperson Teresa Nauber. Germany has also added Spain to the list of locations that should be temporarily avoided for now. «We updated our travel and security warning for Spain and we advise not to travel for unnecessary touristic reasons to the regions of Catalonia, Aragon and Navarra because unfortunately the infection numbers are increasing again and in some parts there are massive restrictions to public life,» explained Burger.
