The trial of the German national charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault of Altena town and pro-refugee Mayor Andreas Hollstein started at the District Court of Hagen on Tuesday. The 56-year-old suspect is accused of stabbing Hollstein with a knife in the neck last November in what authorities believe was a politically motivated attempted assassination. According to suspect's... Еще lawyer Michael Asshauer, his client denies having intent to kill. «He had no intention in any moment to kill the mayor. He only wanted to let him feel the knife on his throat in order to cause the mayor the same fear that the client feels on his own,» Asshauer said. He added that «background is that the client is very depressed and despite many attempts he didn't get any help from the state.» Hollstein is known for having a friendly and welcoming stance towards refugees arriving in Altena by accepting in more refugees than he was required by law. Altena was named the winner of the 'National Prize for Integration' in May 2017.
