Germany: Locals divided over reconstruction of church where Hitler met Hindenburg

Locals expressed opposing opinions about the ongoing reconstruction of the old Garrison Church in Brandenburg’s capital Potsdam, Thursday. The historical church is where Adolf Hitler met with then-President Paul von Hindenburg in March 1933. One local, Sabine, stated, «we appreciate it, but young people don't. We are now at an age when we would say that it would be great to preserve it for the... Еще future.» For others the reconstruction of the church is less positive. Harold stated, «the history of the church is not so uncomplicated,» adding, «we have enough churches in Brandenburg which are empty.» Several organisations have opposed the church's reconstruction due to the building's history. On October 29 around 100 people protested outside the church during a service marking the reconstruction of the church tower. The original church was completed in 1735 and was used as a place of worship for the Prussian royal family. Hitler's meeting with President Paul von Hindenburg at the church after winning elections in March 1933 is widely regarded as a key day in his consolidation of power, since it was seen as legitimising him in the eyes of the elites. The building was heavily damaged by an Allied air raid in 1945, and demolished in 1968 in the GDR. Reconstruction work is due for completion in 2020.
