Germany: He's made the world a better place — Merkel and Junker attend Schauble's 75th birthday

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker were at German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble's 75th birthday festivities, in Offenburg, on Monday. Merkel wished her Finance Minister health, family time and new discoveries, while Juncker praised Schauble's achievements. He said, «Schauble ensures that we don't pass by one another in Europe, but that we march... Еще in one direction», adding that he has «made the world a better place». Schauble was touched by the reception and thanked the around 700 people present, remarking that he was now looking forward to celebrating his 80th Birthday. Wolfgang Schauble has been a member of the German Bundestag since 1972 and has served as Merkel's Finance Minister since 2009, presiding over the Eurozone crisis and bailout of the Greek economy. In 1990, while Schauble was the German Interior Minister in Helmut Kohl's government, a would-be assassin fired three shots at him during a campaign rally. While he survived the assassination attempt, the injuries sustained to his spinal cord left him paralysed.
