Germany: Hamburg sex workers demand reopening of brothels

Sex workers staged a protest in Hamburg's red-light district on Saturday, demanding that brothels be allowed to reopen from their prolonged closure due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Posing with masks along Hamburg's window-lined Herbertstrasse, the sex workers held up signs with slogans such as «We are hygiene professionals» and «We pay taxes and now nobody helps us!» Prostitution, which is legal in Germany, has been banned since mid-March, despite widespread easing of restrictions across the country. Trade organisations such as the Professional Association for Erotic and Sexual Service Providers (BeSD) have staged protests in several cities over the last several months, and have accused lawmakers of attempting to install a permanent prohibition on sex work.
