Germany: Government pledges EUR 500 mln to tackle air pollution, protesters deem measure futile

German government announced at a press conference in Berlin, Monday, that it will contribute with EUR 500 million (USD 595 million) to a mobility fund in a bid to help tackle and reduce pollution emissions, increasing the overall budget to EUR 1 billion (USD 1.19 billion). Speaking to the press, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed that she is against a ban on diesel vehicle and «will... Еще undertake everything possible to prevent (this) ban». The fund will contribute to the development and implementation of new mobility concepts such as electro cars, and in cleaning up public transportation, in an attempt to sidetrack Stuttgart’s court weighing-up of a ban of diesel vehicles from 2018. A number of protesters affiliated with the Green Party staged a demonstration outside the press conference venue, holding signs with slogans deriding the fund and deeming it pointless, such as «money doesn't make the air clean» and «Health before corporate interests, Mrs. Merkel!»
