Germany: French Resistance fighter's heir gets back painting looted during WWII

A piece of art belonging to French Resistance fighter Georges Mandel was returned to his granddaughter at a press conference at Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin on Tuesday. The painting, 'Portrait of a Seated Young Woman' by Thomas Couture, was looted from Georges Mandel’s apartment in Paris during the Second World War. Mandel’s granddaughter and heir to the portrait, Maria de las Mercedes... Еще Estrada, attended the event in Berlin alongside her step-father Wolfgang Kleinertz. Speaking to the press, Kleinertz said, «We, the heirs, are of course very happy to receive today, after more than 70 years this work of art, stolen from the apartment of Georges Mandel in 1940.» Berlin State minister for Culture and Media Monike Gruetters also spoke at the event, and said “with every restitution to the rightful heirs, we should show respect for the fates of their [the pieces] Jewish owners.”
