German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yucel was among the hosts of the 2018 Frankfurt Book Fair on Friday, as he took part in a debate on freedom of speech. The Die Welt correspondent's arrest in 2017 strained bilateral relationships between Turkey and Germany. Yucel was eventually released in February 2018. He expressed his concern that the situation in Turkey could deteriorate. «I fear that things... Еще will continue to break down until they get rid of these gangsters.» Yucel was detained and imprisoned on charges of espionage, with the Turkish government accusing him of both being a spy for Germany and providing support for terrorist groups. The German government dismissed the allegations, which were criticised internationally as an attempt to suppress free speech. The Frankfurt Book Fair this year is taking place between 10 and 14 October.
