The world's largest book fair, the Frankfurter Buchmesse, kicked off on Tuesday with strong opening remarks against Turkish President Recep Erdogan and US President Donald Trump. Heinrich Riethmuller, Managing Director of Osiandersche Buchhandlung, one of the largest German publishing house, condemned Erdogan's restriction on freedom of speech and freedom of press, saying «Turkey is still the... Еще country with the most imprisoned cultural and media professionals worldwide. And the charges against the released are still standing. In the eyes of President Erdogan, they are — as he said here in Germany not long ago — simply terrorists.» President of the Franfurt Book Fair Juergen Boos talked about how a remark from Trump against African countries prompted a powerful answer from publishing houses: «When Donald Trump obnoxiously described some countries as «shithole countries», many bookshops across the USA reacted by taking literature from these countries, printing and releasing it. That added up a lot. We regard with great satisfaction that this diversity of non-Western literary self-awareness is now available everywhere». The Frankfurt Book Fair last year attracted around 286,000 visitors. It will last from October 10 to October 14.
