Germany: Fire department practices rescue operation atop Reichstag dome

The Berlin fire department practised rescuing an injured person from the Reichstag dome, on Wednesday, as part of a rescue exercise. As the German federal parliament is on summer recess, the fire department used it as an opportunity to practice a rescue scenario. They simulated an incident in which a maintenance worker fell five metres deep into the cone inside the glass dome, which is used to guide daylight into the plenary hall and suck out used air. Press officer of Berlin's fire department, Rolf Erbe, said the parliament building «presents a special challenge to rescue from high altitudes and low depths» adding, «we have to prepare for all technical possibilities here, therefore have a special troop in service with us, all around on duty, who is in a position to abseil the patient from different positions.»
