Deputy Government spokesperson Martina Fietz said the German government stands by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and its work, saying the United States withdrawal was «a setback for international cooperation» during a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.
«We need more international cooperation in order to defeat the virus and not less. Therefore the focus of the federal government is to cooperate,» she said.
At the presser, Fietz also took the opportunity to discuss the situation in Hong Kong saying that the German government is looking at examining the situation regarding the civil rights of Hong Kong.
«It remains in our expectation that the rule of law applicable in Hong Kong will be respected and that the peaceful exercise of civil rights for all citizens will not be called into question within the scope of their application. This is the basis for stability and prosperity in Hong Kong, « She added.
Fietz comments come as the US formally started withdrawing from the WHO this week after US President Donald Trump accused China of manipulating the actions taken by the organisation regarding the handling of the COVID-19 global pandemic.
