Far-right activists came to blows with counter-demonstrators in Kandel on Saturday, during an anti-immigration protest. According to reports, some 1,500 protesters gathered at the demonstration, organised by Alternative for Germany (AfD) together with a «women's rights» group called «Kandel ist überall» [Kandel is everywhere]. They held placards with slogans such as «Freedom instead of Islam... Еще» and «Merkel must go,» condemning the recent murder of a young German girl by an Afghan asylum seeker in their town and demanding the resignation of Chancellor Angela Merkel. «We cannot and don't want to endure the current situation in our country any more. I mean the massive wave of refugees who come here and plunge the country into chaos. We simply want Merkel to pack her things and resign from her office,» said one of the protesters. At the same time, a large counter-protest took place nearby with people chanting «Nazis out! Together against racism!» Despite a heavy police presence, clashes erupted between the two groups.
