As Bundesliga matches are being played in empty stadiums as a precaution amid the coronavirus outbreak, Borussia Dortmund (BVB) and Schalke 04 fans gathered in Recklinghausen's drive-in cinema to watch the Ruhr area derby together on Saturday.
Supporters parked their cars in front of a 100 s qm (1076 sq ft) LED screen, which usually shows movies but adapted to the current situation to give... Еще people the chance to still experience events together.
«The derby is always something special and one likes to watch special games with friends or relatives, so preferably in a group rather than alone at home,» said BVB fan Mo el-Ahmad.
«After the long pause from football we are showing the local derby here. Dortmund against Schalke and here in the Ruhr area football is a religion. And this is why it is beautiful to show something like this here [...]. It's an experiment with football in the drive-in cinema but the experiment succeeded, people are happy, they are happy that football can be watched again and are happy to get together again,» said event organizer Mirko Simnovec.
The German top league is the first major football championship to return since the pandemic shut down major sports competitions worldwide. Previously the German Football League (DFL) announced that the season could be extended to July, as all remaining games could not be played by June 30, as originally planned. The DFL also decided that teams would be allowed to make up to five substitutions during games, and that fixtures could be moved to neutral venues at short notice if necessary.
With eight games left to play, BVB remains in second place on the table, four points behind Bayern Munich, after defeating Schalke 04 4-0, sending them two positions down to the eight place.
