Around 1,000 protesters rallied in Dessau, on Tuesday, to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the death of Sierra Leonean asylum seeker Oury Jalloh while in custody of the German police.
According to the police on On January 7, 2005, the 36-year-old Jalloh died after a fire was started in the cell he was being detained in, as his feet and hands were handcuffed to the floor. Reports indicate that... Еще the fire alarm went off at least twice and was turned off by the police, while cries for help were also heard and ignored. Nobody responded to any signs of Jalloh being in distress, according to the investigation which is still arguably inconclusive.
The state prosecutor charged two Dessau police officers with «manslaughter through negligence,» yet they were both subsequently acquitted. In 2018, the Attorney General of Saxony-Anhalt ruled out a reopening of the case.
