Germany: DefMin AKK says results 'encouraging' on sniffer dogs detecting COVID-19

German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said results were «very encouraging» on research in to using sniffer dogs to detect COVID-19, at an army service dog school, in Ulmen, on Friday. Speaking to the press, the Defence Minister said that the dogs cannot smell COVID-19 but rather «the biochemical processes, the process of change which this virus causes,» she added, «I would like to make it clear the essential next steps are to differentiate between the normal influenza virus and whether it is really an active carrier.» The army dog handlers showed Kramp-Karrenbauer a demonstration of how the sniffer dogs can detect saliva samples of people infected with COVID-19. They were rewarded with dog treats and toys for identifying positive samples.
