German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday in Berlin, where they discussed current state of the European Union and its possible enlargement in the West Balkans.
«Hungary is bringing the enlargement commissioner to the commission and the geographic position of Hungary is certainly so, that there is a special interest in a good... Еще neighbourhood and a good development of the area», Merkel said.
France blocked accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania in 2019.
Orban expressed his support for enlargement, but insisted that Serbia be included as part of «stabilisation».
In 2014, former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, initiated accession negotiations for Western Balkan countries including Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia and Albania.
After five years of inaction, calls are growing to charge the enlargement process in future.
