Germany: berlin wants to use 'momentum' of Zelensky governemnt to mend Russia ties
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas welcomed the recent developments in the Ukraine conflict since the election of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, he said at the Berlin Foreign Policy Forum organised by the Korber foundation on Tuesday.
«This is the actual war at our front door. People are dying at our... Еще front door. The recent developments are sending cautious positive signals. Together with France, we are working on the revival of the Minsk process. We are urging Russia to make their influence on the separatists finally count. We want to use the new momentum that has emerged with President Zelensky assuming office, and we want to use it now. We are working towards a summit in the Normandy format that will take place in Paris. This would be a right step on a long journey to a better understanding not only between Ukraine and Russia, but also between Europe and Russia,» Maas said.
The minister pointed out Germany and Europe's security interests are tightly connected to the United States, without whom neither Europe nor Germany would be able to defend themselves, Maas said.
The event also featured a number of European officials including Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soreide, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Olena Zerkal and Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.
