Germany called on all sides in the Middle East to exercise «extreme caution» following the US assassination of Iran's Quds Force General Qassem Soleimani, during a weekly government press conference in Berlin on Monday.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson have called for «extreme caution, for considerateness, for a sense of... Еще responsibility» on behalf of all parties, said German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert.
«Russia is an important actor on the global stage and as a member of the UN Security Council vital when it comes to solving political conflicts. Therefore it is obvious, that the Chancellor talks with President Putin about the current existing conflict zones in the Middle East,» Seibert added.
«We have to and also will accept any decision, that the Iraqi government will come to in regards to the presence of foreign armed forces in their country,» Seibert said regarding the Iraqi parliament's resolution urging the government to expel foreign troops from Iraq.
«We saw the explanation of the USA for this [airstrike]. But the information to comprehend the explanation is missing. For us it is clear, that military violence must only be the last resort,» Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rainer Breul said regarding Soleimani's killing.
Soleimani and the deputy leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi, also known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and other militia leaders were killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad's international airport last week.
The Pentagon released a statement confirming that the US had carried out the airstrike at the order of US President Donald Trump, calling it a «decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad.» Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said «severe revenge awaits the criminals» behind the attack.
