The cybercrime unit in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia investigates 30,000 suspects in a probe into a paedophile network in Bergisch Gladbach. Quiet streets and public spaces in the region after authorities announced the widening probe could be seen on Monday.
The investigations cover the distribution and use of child pornography. Late last year police in the region detained a man over allegations of abusing his baby daughter. The man was accused of filming and sharing videos of the abuse via the internet.
The investigation has identified 70 suspects nationwide thus far. The first offender sentenced in May was a 27-year-old soldier who got 10 years in prison and is now in a psychiatric hospital.
