Around 50 asparagus farm workers protested against poor living and working conditions in the German town of Bornheim, near Bonn on Monday.

«The coach drivers are coming telling us to sign, the staff gives us all sort of signs and we don't know what for, it says on that sign that we have entered a contract for a duration of three months. We did not work for three months. We only worked for a month,» one protester said. «They threatened us that if we refused to go out and work, that was last week, they'd call the police on us.»
The Bonn general gazette has reported that around 240 harvest helpers have been accommodated in cramped conditions — sometimes four or five in one room.
