Germany: Arrests made as left and right-wing protesters clash in Hamburg

Hamburg police were deployed to defuse the situation at central Rathausmarkt square on Saturday, as clashes erupted between protesters. Allegedly 3,000 left and right-wing protesters attended the demonstration, armed with placards. Protesters could be seen holding banners while chanting and singing, with others sitting on the ground or arguing with each other or police. Signs reading (German... Еще): «Merkel, you mug. Hands off the constitutional state,» and «For respect, full memory; to trivialise Holocaust denial is against our human rights,» appeared at the protest. The rally was initially organised as an anti-lockdown protest with local authorities limiting the number of participants to 50 in order to comply with social distancing rules. Antifa supporters, conspiracy theorists, left-wing extremists, neo-Nazis and hooligans showed up to the demonstration. Several arrests have been made.
