The squatters and eco-activists of ZAD (Zone a Defendre/Zone to Defend) were driven back by a heavy firing of tear gas by riot police as the evacuation of the squats by French authorities continued, on Tuesday in Notre-Dame-des-Landes. Footage shows the squatters putting up a fight against the authorities, creating make-shift barriers, fires, and throwing burning sticks of wood. Some of the... Еще activists wore gas masks or other facial coverings to protect themselves from the tear gas. The ZAD activists initially came together in 2008 to protest against a proposed airport in Nantes. The plan was recently abandoned, however it is estimated that up to 200 activists remained at the site and refused to leave it, despite evacuation orders and forced eviction threats.
