France: Wanted Catalan Puigdemont greeted by supporters as he takes MEP seat

Catalan independence activists greeted the exiled President of the Catalonian Government Carles Puigdemont ahead of his first session as the member of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Monday. Benefiting from the newly acquired parliamentary immunity, the former Catalonian leader will continue the fight for the self-determination of the region outside of Spain, as Madrid officials had... Еще issued a warrant for his arrest over alleged sedition and organisation of banned 2017 independence referendum. The acting Catalonian leader Quim Torra, who joined the pro-independence demonstration, pointed out that Puidgemont's partner, former Vice-President Oriol Junqueras is still in jail over similar accusations and that Barcelona will continue negotiations for the release of «political prisoners and exiles of Catalonia,» he pledged to media. Puidgemont fled to Belgium over the threat of possible arrest, while Junqueras was detained in October and now serving a 13-year sentence.
