The European Parliament elected, by 383 votes in favour to 327 votes against, German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen as the new president of the European Commission for the next five years, during plenary session held in Strasbourg on Tuesday.

Von der Leyen, who was nominated earlier this month by EU leaders, needed 374 votes to get the
post. The new president is scheduled to take office from the end of October.
